To create a Walmart debit account, you need to either sign up online or visit a Walmart store. Luckily, there are thousands of them all around the world. When you pick up a temporary MoneyCard, you will have to buy it at the checkout, paying the amount that will serve as your initial deposit. Make sure you keep your receipt until you receive your permanent card.
When you sign up online, you will have to provide a phone number. You will need to call from that number to activate your card. You will also need to type in your Social Security number and birth date so that Walmart can verify your identity. Note that if you sign up this way your card will not initially have any money on it.
To activate your card if you buy it in the store, you’ll need to go online and type in the activation number on your receipt, the last four digits on the temporary card and a captcha code, which simply proves you are a real person and not a spam program. Once you click continue, you’ll be asked to enter some personal information including your name, address and Social Security number. Then you will get a permanent card in the mail.
Adding Money To Your Card
Your MoneyCard doesn’t have a bill, per se, it works a lot like a gift card since the balance goes down as you spend and you have to reload it periodically. You can’t simply add cash to your card. Instead, you have to go to Walmart and reload your card by giving cash to a cashier or purchasing a MoneyPak. MoneyPaks are located near the front of the store in the same place where you find the MoneyCards. The packs are available in increments from $20 to $1,100. Once you’ve purchased MoneyPak, the money isn’t added automatically. Instead, you have to enter both its authorization number and your card number online or call 1-800-GREENDOT to do so over the phone. Note that different Walmarts have different denominations of MoneyPaks available. You may want to call the store before you visit.
Additional Information
Since the Walmart debit card is not linked to a checking account, you don’t have to worry about any overdraft fees. However, if you try to spend more money than what you have on your card, your purchase will be declined. Make sure you read your cardholder agreement to find out about reload fees and other fees which you could incur.
