Balance Transfer Day Controversy May Be Good for Consumers

A few weeks ago, a Facebook page declaring December 11th as Balance Transfer Day sprung up. This marginally coherent “movement” to occupy credit card companies was clearly aiming to piggyback on the success of the Move Your Money Project as well as the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

The stated goal of the “movement” was to get consumers to utilize low and 0% balance transfers as a way to save money while getting back at major credit card companies. The underlying logic and motives weren’t so clear.

Credit Card Rewards Customers Are Waiting For

Credit card companies are now offering lots of freebies and treats for their customers. This is to encourage more people to purchase more since shopping season is up coming and people are hurrying to complete their Christmas shopping. Those who have a good credit score will surely benefit from the rewards most credit cards are offering since these companies truly aim to give incentives and cash back to those who are considered as good payers. Rewards may be very attractive to consumers since there are also travel miles that are given for free.

According to Bill Hardekopf of a famous credit card website, credit card companies are now turning to rewards and deals for their customers simply because it is more effective in encouraging their customers to make purchases than encouraging them to use their debit cards. Do the latest credit cards hit the mark?

The AA Reward Plus credit card offers 3pc cashback on fuel purchases and 0.5pc cashback on all other spending but, until this week, was available only to AA members. Now the AA Visa card is open to all, offering consumers the chance to earn cashback as they spend. The card also charges no annual fee – unlike reward cards from Santander and American Express.

The AA card has a lower interest rate of 19.9pc, compared with Santander’s 22.8pc.For more information or to apply, go to www.theaa.com.

Verdict

Last month, Santander released the 123 reward card, offering 3pc cashback on fuel, 2pc on department store spending and 1pc on supermarkets. The AA claims that its card offers a better deal as although it offers only 0.5pc cashback on non–fuel spending, it offers this on big–ticket items such as holidays. If you do all your spending in the three destinations chosen by Santander, that is the better card; otherwise, the AA wins.
