I have written a bunch about using credit cards overseas and in foreign countries. It does seem that most American banks and credit card issuers really want to sock it to you when it comes to credit card fees for foreign transactions. I just returned from a week long trip to the city of Salvador in Brazil. I had a chance to try out all of my advice that I regularly give my readers, as well as to make some observations as to how credit cards work down there.
Follow My Advice
I recently wrote my Overseas Check List For For Credit Card Users. I was able to perform each checklist item and it all worked out. Amex claims that it is no longer necessary to contact them, but my bank and my other credit card companies were glad I called. I onl

The “big news” in credit cards last week was mostly about cell phones. Three of the largest carriers, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, joined with Discover Financial Services (the world’s fourth largest plastic payments network after Visa, MasterCard, and American Express) to enable payment by cell phone.
Sounds cool, right? Rather than pulling out your wallet, you’d just waive you smart phone in front of the register. You’d get an electronic receipt right on your phone. This method of payment is already big in Japan.
But don’t write off plastic just yet. For consumers, there are issues of convenience and security. At $200 per register, merchants may be reluctant to install new readers. This means that the places that accept pay-by-phone may be limited. You’ll still have to carry your card anyway. And some experts fear that a lost or stolen cell phone could pose more of a risk than a card alone.
Personally, I don’t see the advantages of pay by phone. Not having to carry a card? I’m still going use a walle

Credit card companies will always try to look the most appealing, and that is a simple fact. That is why a comparison of credit card companies is essential in order to get the best deal and the credit card that suits you the best of all…
You might think that once you’ve found a card then that’s it, but you really need to know more about the credit card company too. Research a little by looking at what other credit cards and serivices they offer and see if those are also good deals. If they are only providing one credit card and nothing else then they are probably not as good as other credit card companies out there on the market that can offer you a choice of cards when you decide to sign up with them.
Take Barclaycard for example, and American Express. These two major players are always good companies to get a credit card with simply because they are big names, they have multiple cards to chosoe from and they are pretty much guaranteed to provide a good level of customer service because they can afford to. Also, when it comes to the two credit cards i’ve just mentioned, it’s worth remembering that they are pretty prestigous companies and not just anyone can apply and get accepting these days. This is a good thing if you’ve got the cash to back it up!
Now everyone wants the best rewards from their credit card don’t they? But sadly many people still opt for the first card to accept them when they apply. This can result in them getting very good rewards, but they may be rewards that the cardholder doesn’t need and will never use, like airmiles perhaps or money of wine and CDs…
There are some pretty good reward cards out there however, and we’re going to tell you about a few of them on offer at the moment. One of the top ones at the moment appears to be the American Express Platinum card. With this card you can expect the following benefits:
- Up to 5% cashback. Now there isn’t a much better reward than that is there? Cash back from your credit card allows you to spend the money on what you want rather than what the credit card company would rather you spend your money on like wine and CDs as Virgin would have you do.
- No annual fee
- 19.9% interest rate. This isn’t great but then for a credit card as good as an American Express if you can afford to get one you can afford the interest believe me.
- Purchase protection insurance. Always a good thing.
- Discounts on shopping, dining and entertainment too.
If that isn’t enough for you then you’re not easily satisfied. However, if you want to get your hands on a new shiny Amex card you’re going to have to have at least a cool £30,000 a year coming into your household.
